Running Of Bulls Festival

The fiestas of San Fermin are celebrated in Irunea/Pamplona, in the region of Navarra, every year from the 6th to the 14th of July. They have become internationally known because of the running of the bulls, where the bulls are lead through the streets of the old quarter as far as the bull ring by runners.

The fiestas are celebrated in honor of San Fermin, patron saint of Navarra, although the religious aspect would seem to have taken on a secondary role over the last number of years. Nowadays, the fiestas are seen as a mass gathering of people from all the corners of the world and where the partying, the fun and the joy of it all are the most outstanding ingredients.

The History Of San Fermin Festival

The San Fermin festival's opening ceremony can get really rambunctious, so you'll want to decide whether you'd prefer to view the activities from the street or book one of the city's balconies, typically located on third floor flats. It's important to keep in mind that if you want a balcony you'll need to make reservations ahead of time because space is limited. Most places who rent out balcony space also provide coffee and snacks while you wait for and watch the events.

Fiesta in Pamplona Navarre Spain

As opposed to the more contemporary Tomatina Tomato Fight, another popular festival in Spain, the Running of the Bulls is an ancient festival, dating as far back as the 15th century. Originally held in October, the San Fermin festival is actually a variety of festivals all wrapped up into one including a bullfighting festival, religious celebrations of the patron saint of Pamplona and Navarra, with a few commercial festivals thrown in for good measure, all perfectly merging into one exceptional series of festivals.

The most important day of the festival is July 7th, when thousands of locals and visitors alike follow a replica of Saint Fermin through the streets in the oldest part of Pamplona. San Fermin 2018 will be accompanied by street entertainers and dancers, with some carrying giant representations of famous figures from all over the world including Asia, Europe, Africa and America.
